It can seem impossible at times to achieve weight loss goals. A common pitfall for new exercisers is that they overdo it and then the pain the next day keeps them from continuing. What can you do to make sure you’re successful?
Defining your goals should be a priority on your weight loss journey. What goals do you have that are related to your weight loss? Do you want to be able to wear clothes in smaller sizes? Is there a certain weight you wish to achieve? Or, like most people, do you simply want to make your body fitter and healthier?
Having to stare your progress (or lack thereof) in the face is one way to keep yourself on track. Having a weight loss diary keeps you on the right track because you are recording everything you consume. At the end of each day be sure to count up all of the calories you have consumed to ensure you stayed in a healthy range. You should also use the journal to record how much weight you have lost or gained each week. Including graphs in your weight loss journal can be very motivating.
The worst time to make a decision on what to eat is when you are starving. Plan your meals in advance to avoid temptation, and always make sure you have healthy snacks ready. Make brown bag lunches a new fad at work! Everyone will save money and eat healthier.
An effective weight loss plan includes a healthy diet and a regular exercise routine. Adhering to an exercise routine as part of a fitness plan is difficult for many people, although they may find switching to healthy eating habits a bit simpler. Look for ways to make this easier, such as asking a friend to join you in your workout or switching your routine to an activity you find pleasurable. Why not do both? Get together with your exercise buddy and go for a walk, swim or bike ride!
If you want to stay away from junk food don’t allow it in the house! If the food is not there, you can’t eat it. Switch out the junk food for healthy foods. Keep healthy snacks on hand – fresh fruit, crunchy celery or carrot sticks, anything that appeals to you and is good for your health. Do not buy foods you know you will overindulge in. If you make these foods less accessible you’ll be less likely to partake in them.
Recruit a wide offering of support from your friends and relations. They can provide you with motivation, support, encouragement and advice. If you have someone that you know you have to report to, it makes it easier to do what you know you should. When you need a little pep talk, pick up the phone and talk to a friend. Just hearing their voice should be a reminder of how important it is for you to succeed!
